The Weyburn Humane Society works under contract with the City Police to provide Animal Control 24 hours 7 days a week. The WHS Staff, considered animal control officers (ACO), provide this service from 8:00am until 8:00pm. The City Police continue this service from 8:00pm until 8:00am.
The telephone at the Humane Society has a recorded message after hours indicating you should contact the City Police for this service. 306-848-3250.
The purpose of Animal Control is to ensure the public adheres to the Animal Bylaws set by the City of Weyburn. The current bylaws can be found HERE. Work is being done at present to review and update these bylaws and institute new polices.
This duty includes apprehending dogs and cats roaming at large that are reported to us by the public. If we are successful, they are safely housed in our animal shelter, provided food and water. We then make every effort to return them to their owners. The first task upon apprehension is to check for identification, whether it is a microchip, a tattoo or a tag.
A microchip makes a huge difference in the time it takes to return your lost pet and we encourage every pet owner to have your animal chipped. Consult any vet clinic for more information about this valuable tool.
The Humane Society accepts roaming animals brought in by the Public from the City of Weyburn. If we have space we sometimes accept animals from out of our city limits, but first and foremost space is reserved for city animals.
Of course we must charge a claim fee for the service we provide to cover our costs.
CLAIM FEES **as of March 1st, 2018
- If you claim your cat or dog the same day it comes to us, the fee is $20.00.
- If you do not come until the next day the fee is $30.00.
- An additional $30.00 will be charged for each day we house the animal.
- Satisfactory proof of ownership must be provided to claim your animal.
Animals in our care become the property of the Humane Society if after 72 hours no one has come forth to claim them. We then have the option of re-homing the animal.
